THANK YOU, Senator Specter!
VotePA commends Pennsylvania
Senator Arlen Specter for becoming the first cosponsor added
to Florida Senator Bill Nelson's Voter Confidence & Increased
Accessibility Act, S. 1431. Senator Specter added his name to
the bill on Friday, December 18 while VotePA's Executive Director
Marybeth Kuznik was present in Washington D.C.
S. 1431 is the Senate version
of New Jersey Representative Rush Holt's Voter Confidence &
Increased Accessibility Act (HR 2894) that was introduced in
the US House earlier this year and currently has 97 bipartisan
cosponsors including several key US House leaders.
More information about the
bill(s) is available at http://www.HR2894.org.
HR 2894 / S. 1431 are very
important bills for Pennsylvania and other states that still
use Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) voting machines, and for
our entire country which is under a new and perhaps even more
dangerous threat of Internet Voting. Both of these bills will
replace the unverifiable and unauditable DREs with voter-marked
paper ballots, will require basic audits of all federal elections,
and will outlaw transmission of votes via the Internet.
Most importantly, HR 2894 /
S. 1431 provides a basic floor level of voting system protection
for all American voters while allowing individual states to institute
even stronger audits and similar protections for their elections
if desired.
VotePA thanks Senator Specter
for his cosponsorship of the Voter Confidence & Increased
Accessibility Act and for his ongoing support of fair and accurate
elections. We hope that all Pennsylvania voters will take the
time to thank Senator Specter as well.
We urge every Pennsylvanian
to contact Senator Robert Casey, Jr. and ask him to join Senator
Specter as a cosponsor of S. 1431, and for voters in other states
to do likewise with their own Senators.
It is long past the time that
we as a nation should finally decide to make sure every vote
is truly counted by making sure that every American has basic
protection from the problems that still plague our voting systems.
HR 2894 / S. 1431 is a much-needed step to achieve that goal.
